Happy Thursday, Blockfolians
The Lede
Welp, Square/Twitter’s Jack Dorsey is back to his awesome ways again. Square has just announced the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA).
The idea of COPA is simple. Instead of locking up technology in patents, participating crypto companies pledge to make their patents available to all the other members of the alliance. Think a network effect but for open patents.
From Square’s statement:
Locking up foundational cryptocurrency technologies in patents stifles innovation and adoption; and offensive use of patents by bad actors threatens the growth of cryptocurrency technologies
Excellent stuff!
